报告题目:Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures, and Intelligent Systems
报告摘要:
Smart materials are those that alter their shape, stiffness or other properties in response to external stimuli, such as changes in temperature, electrical or magnetic field. By utilizing these adaptive features, smart materials can be built as sensors and actuators. When combined with controllers, these systems emulate the biological functions of nerves, muscles, and the brain. Piezoelectric materials and magneto-rheological (MR) fluids have been employed for controlling vibration, with applications ranging from hard disk drives to vehicle suspension systems. On the other hand, energy can also be harvested from ambient vibration and human motion. Piezoelectric and electromagnetic generators can transform the mechanical energy from vibration and human motion into electricity. Such self-powered systems offer a sustainable alternative by reclaiming energy that would otherwise be wasted. Besides, exoskeletons that can assist people with impaired mobility have been developed. With the developed device, paralyzed individual can regain the ability to stand and walk. Smart ankle-foot prosthesis with compact cam-spring mechanism have also been implemented to enable amputees to walk with reduced effort and improved gait symmetry. Furthermore, the integration of additive manufacturing with smart materials has birthed 4D printing, creating structures capable of self-expansion or contraction on-demand. Related work will be presented.
报告人简介:

廖维新,香港中文大学机械与自动化工程系卓敏讲席教授,现担任智能设计与制造研究所所长,曾任香港中文大学工学院副院长, 机械与自动化工程系系主任(2018-2024)。入选美国机械工程师学会(ASME)、英国物理学会(IOP)及香港工程师学会(HKIE)会士。
廖教授在美国宾夕法尼亚州立大学获得机械工程博士学位,自1997年8月起任职于香港中文大学,长期从事智能材料、自适应结构、振动控制、能量采集、智能系统与机构设计等领域研究,已发表技术论文500余篇,拥有30项专利。其中,8篇期刊论文获得ASME、IMechE和IOP颁发的“最佳论文”或“高被引论文奖”。他曾担任第20届自适应结构与技术国际会议大会主席,以及SPIE Active and Passive Smart Structures and Integrated Systems主席。廖教授曾获2020年ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Award、2018年SPIE SSM Lifetime Achievement Award(终身成就奖),以表彰其在智能结构与材料领域的重要贡献; 2023年ASME Leonardo da Vinci Award(达芬奇奖),以表彰其在机械设计领域的杰出成就。他现任Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures副主编,并担任Smart Materials and Structures期刊执行编委。
