Industrial Big Data and Composite Structures

Introduction

This summer course invited distinguished experts and scholars from leading international academic institutions, each with extensive research and teaching experience in their respective fields. This interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary learning platform offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to deepen students' understanding of advanced topics such as the effects of composite materials, engineering applications and multi-scale simulation. The course develop academic writing skills to enhance students' research capabilities. Key features of the course include lectures from renowned academics such as Professor Zidong Wang, a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and IEEE, who will lead a session on big data analysis, exploring fundamental concepts, data processing and practical applications in engineering. Professor Eugene Chen from the University of Manitoba will teach Time Series Statistical Analysis for Mechanical Condition Monitoring, focusing on statistical methods, monitoring technologies and fault diagnosis. Dr Qianchen Sun from the University of Cambridge will cover Digital Twins and their applications in AEC, discussing system architectures and practical project implementation.

Admission Information

Entry Requirement: The program caters to a wide variety of audiences, not only the undergraduates and postgraduates in Materials Science and Engineering, all students are encouraged to join in the program without grade requirements.

Enrollment: 100 students online, unlimited number of students offline. Students from XJTU-MSE participate in offline courses, while students from other schools participate in online courses.



Lecturer Profile

Professor Zidong Wang is currently a Chair Professor at Brunel University London, a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, an IEEE Fellow, and the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Systems Science and Neurocomputing. He has been engaged in research on control theory, machine learning, bioinformatics, and other fields for many years, and has published over 700 international papers in SCI journals. He is currently or has previously served as the Editor-in-Chief, Associate Editor, or Editorial Board Member of twelve international journals. He has also served as the President of the Chinese Automation and Computing Society in the UK, a National Leading Talent at Donghua University, and a National Expert at Tsinghua University.

Dr Eugene Chen is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2020. His research interests include reliability analysis of mechatronic systems, fault diagnosis, condition monitoring, prognostics and health management, machine learning, and intelligent manufacturing informatization. He has published 23 SCI journal papers, 9 conference papers, and 1 book chapter, and has been granted 10 invention patents (including 3 as the first inventor, and 1 that has been commercialized). As the first and corresponding author, he has published 16 SCI journal papers, including 11 in JCR Q1 journals, with 4 first-author papers in the top journal Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing. Additionally, Dr. Eugene Chen has received the Alberta Science Innovation Award, the Best Paper Award at the Canadian Rotating Machinery Symposium, and third place in the International Prognostics and Health Management Competition. He has (or has served as) a Guest Editor for Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence, the Conference Secretary for APARM2020 Vancouver, a member of the IEEE PHM Project Committee, and has been a long-term reviewer for journals such as IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, and Reliability Engineering and System Safety.


Professor Vincent B. C. Tan is an Associate Professor and Deputy Head at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore. After obtaining his BEng and MEng in Mechanical Engineering from the National University of Singapore, he pursued his PhD  Mechanical Engineering at Northwestern University,USA. Currently, his research interests are in computational homogenization and multiscal modelling.computational modelling bioinspired composites. failure of composite materials, impact mechanics and ballistics. His research has been funded by both industrial and research agency grants, including US Air Force Office of Scientific Research Agency for Science, Technology and Research, Defence Science Organization Ministry of Education Ministry of Defence. Vestas, and Airbus. Heserves on the editorial boards of several journals, including Composites Part BMechanics of Materials, and International Journal of Applied Mechanics. He is a Vice President and Fellow of the Association for Computational Mechanics (Singapore)and is a General Council Member of both the International Association of Computational Mechanics and Asian Pacific Association for Computational Mechanics. He co-chaired the 23rd International Workshop on Computational Mechanics of Materials in Singapore (2013) and has served on the scientific advisory committees of several international conferences.A winner of multiple teaching awards at both the Faculty and University levels. he teaches modules on mmechanics mathematics and numerical methods.


Professor Dr Tong Earn TAY is a Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). He has a PhD in Solid Mechanics from the University of Melbourne, Australia.His research interests are in progressive damage, failure, delamination impact and adaptive multi-fidelity and multi-scale computational analysis of fiber-reinforced composite materials and structures. He was previous Head of Department of Department of Mechanical Engineering, NUS from 2011 to 2015,and Vice-Dean for Research for Faculty of Engineering,NUS from 2009 to 2011.He is an associate editor for the Journal of Reinforced Plastics & Composites, and editorial board member of the Journal of Composite Materials, International Journal of Damage Mechanics. Applied Composite Materials. Multi-scale and Multidisciplinary Modeling Experiment and Design. and Journal of Multiscale Modeling. He is a registered Professional Engineer (PE).Chartered Engineer (CEng) Founding Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering (FSAE) and Council Member of the Asian-Australasian Association for Composite Materials.


Professor Zhongwei Guan is Executive Director of Advanced Materials Research Centre of Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi UAE. He received his PhD on Structural Behaviour of Polymeric Pipe lining in University of Bradford UK. He was Reader in Lightweight Composite Materials and Structures at the University of Liverpool. Hehas published more than 180 SCI papers in refereed leading international journals on lightweight composite structures subjected to extreme loading conditions such as projectile impact and blast,covering fibre metal laminates, PVC foam-based sandwiches and SLM lattice structures, corrugated sandwiches, timber structures, high temperature prepreg etc He was Chairman of the 5th International Conference on Computational Methods held in Cambridge in 2014. He is a member of editorial board of International Journal of Impact EngineeringApplied Composite Materials and Advanced Materials. He also serves as a scientific committee member of more than 20international conferences and has given more than 25 keynotes thematic and plenary speeches.


Dr. Rafael C. Santiago is graduated in mechanical engineering from the University of São Paulo (Brazil) in 2008, and he got his PhD degree in impact loadings on aeronautical structures at the University of São Paulo (Brazil) in cooperation with the University of Liverpool (UK) in 2014. He was an adjunct professor at Federal University of ABC (Brazil) between 2015-2020, coordinating the Aerospace Engineering course since 2018. He was a post-doctorate at the University of São Paulo between 2014 and 2016, a research visitor at Liverpool John Moores University (UK) in 2017, and lecturer at Universidade Anhembi Morumbi (Brazil) between 2014 and 2015. His interests include composite materials, fibre-metal laminates, experimental methods, and finite-elements analysis. In addition, he conducted research projects on low/high-velocity impact on additive manufacturing structures, CubeSats, automotive safety, helmet design, high-strain rate materials characterization, and dynamic FE models in cooperation with Brazil, United Kingdom, Morocco, South Africa, Singapore, and Australia. Rafael has joined Technology Innovation Institute in 2020, where he established a research group at the Advanced Materials Research Center dedicated to structural impact.
