讲座摘要:Structural diagnosis and prognosis have been of great interest to engineers since the advent of large-scale industrial accidents. As machinery becomes increasingly complex, maintenance must incorporate rigorous diagnostic procedures to predict potential failures and prevent catastrophic consequences. Moreover, the entire structural lifespan must be carefully adapted to specific operating conditions. This approach enables sustainable design and maintenance, which not only provides financial benefits but also has a positive environmental impact by minimizing wasted human labor and resources while reducing the carbon footprint.
The Structural Integrity Assessment Research Group focuses on two main research areas: non-destructive testing and the fatigue and fracture of materials, both of which contribute to the evaluation of structural residual life. During the presentation, the group's advancements in these research directions will be briefly discussed.
The section on non-destructive testing will cover damage identification methods, including laser Doppler vibrometry and shearography, as well as a proprietary NDT technique based on thermography, alongside ultrasonic and optical techniques. The second part of the presentation will focus on hysteretic heating in composite materials during fatigue loading, illustrated with several examples. Additionally, recent advancements in the synthesis of multifunctional composite materials for aviation will be briefly presented.

讲座人简介:
Andrzej Katunin is an associate professor at the Silesian University of Technology, Poland, in the Department of Fundamentals of Machinery Design. He graduated with honors from the Silesian University of Technology in 2008 in the field of Mechanics and Machine Design. In 2012, he defended his doctoral dissertation with honors in the discipline of Mechanics, and in 2015 he obtained habilitation in the discipline of Machine Design and Operation in the field of non-destructive testing of materials at the same university. He established and leads the Structural Integrity Assessment Research Group. The main scientific interests of Prof. Katunin include problems of fatigue and fracture of composite materials, including thermal effects occurring in these processes, non-destructive testing of materials and methods of damage identification, methods of signal and image analysis applied to processing the results of non-destructive testing, multi-functional composite materials, e.g. for aircraft applications. He has gained experience through international research internships in Germany, France, Portugal, Slovakia, and China.
He has received numerous awards, including scholarships from the Minister of Science and Higher Education and the Foundation for Polish Science, as well as the POLITYKA scientific award and the Popularizer of Science award granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and the Polish Press Agency.
Currently he is a member of the Committee of Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences and serves as vice-chair of the Polish Young Academy of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the European Society for Composite Materials, the Polish Society of Composite Materials, and the Polish Society of Technical Diagnostics and a member of the editorial boards of the journals Mechanics of Composite Materials, Shock and Vibration, Journal of Composites Sciences, Diagnostyka, Journal of KONBiN.
