Title: Development of heavy metal ions detector driven by surface acoustic waves

Abstract: We have developed a micro-detector driven by surface acoustic waves (SAWs). The SAWs enhance the oxidation current in electrochemical reactions by promoting liquid mixing, therefore the sensitivity of electrochemical detection in the microfluidic system is effectively improved. After comparing liquid diffusion efficiency between different angles of concentric circular type focused interdigital transducer (FIDTs) and different types of interdigital transducers, the FIDTs with an angle of 30° had the best liquid diffusion effect. Driven by the focused surface acoustic waves (FSAWs), the oxidation current is 1.5 times larger than that with SIDTs-mixing. In addition, the Cottrell relationship from current analysis measurements shows that the molecular diffusion rate has increased 17.5 times by using FIDTs. This study could provide the basis for the designing different chemical reaction detectors based on SAWs.
